Did you know 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and more than 232,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year in the U.S. alone?
But there is hope, friends – There are more than 28 million breast cancer survivors living in the U.S. right now, and by being proactive and acting now, you can be one of the 37 lives saved every day by cancer education and screenings.
Breast cancer cannot be completely prevented, but early detection provides the greatest possibility of successful treatment. These three important steps can help increase your chance of detecting cancer early.
3 Important Steps to Breast Cancer Early Detection
Breast Self-Awareness – Become familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel. Knowing this will help you identify any changes in your breasts that should be reported to your health care professional promptly
Well Exams – During your annual exam with your healthcare provider is a great time to discuss questions or concerns. Your doctor may perform a brief breast exam to check for abnormalities as well.
Mammograms – In its early stages, breast cancer doesn’t usually cause symptoms. Mammograms can detect cancer or other problems before a lump becomes large enough to be detectable to the touch. National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) recommends that women ages 40 and older get a mammogram every year.
Did you know a healthy lifestyle may help reduce your risk for certain cancers as well?
Healthy Lifestyle Habits to Note
• Eat five servings or more of fruits and vegetables each day
• Get regular physical activity
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Limit alcohol intake to no more than one drink per day
• Do not smoke, or quit smoking
